Julio Suárez
Galería Agustina Ferreyra is proud to present Julio Suárez’s second solo presentation at the Gallery.
In the exhibition, the artist continues to explore the language of abstraction, this time operating between painting and sculpture, merging fields of color that create illusions of depth and movement. The works integrate two geometric forms while playing with space and background, and the limits between the extension of the forms, the extension of color and the tensions generated between them.
In a recent conversation with the artist I asked him about what he wanted to include and talk about in the press release. He told me he would send me something from which I could start drafting.
A few days later, I received an email with a link to a poem by the Spanish writer Juan Ramón Jiménez. The poem read:

¡Do not touch it anymore, so is the rose!
This is probably the briefest poem ever written by Juan Ramón Jiménez, and probably one of the briefest ever written in the history of Spanish poetry. It is also the most precise and simple way of understanding the work of Julio Suárez.
Just like Jiménez, and his interest in finding ‘pure poetry’, one could say Suárez continues to explore pure abstraction; the perfect fusion of background and figure, that in its most pure state is ineffable. That painting that expresses a complex thought in a simple way, the painting that deals with fundamental aspects of the medium such as the function of color and form on a given space. That painting that remains, just like pure poetry, after everything that it is not painting has been removed.
Julio Suárez (b.1947) lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He studied scenography in the National School of Theater (INBA) in México City, and has exhibited extensively throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. His work is part of several private and institutional collections such as the Puerto Rican Cultural Institute (ICP); The Museum of Puerto Rican Art (MAPR), The Contemporary Art Museum of Panamá and The Contemporary Art Museum of Puerto Rico (MAC).
